Are You A Candidate For Dentures?
- May 08, 2017 -

A dental patient may have missing teeth for a variety of reasons; they could have been the victim of a car accident or other similar injury, they could be genetically predisposed to having unhealthy teeth, or perhaps they didn’t practice good oral hygiene throughout their life.  Whatever the reason, there are options available to replace the missing teeth, even if all the teeth are gone.  Dental implants are a good choice if the patient has strong bone support in the jaw.  But if that’s not the case, the patient will need to wear dentures.

A denture replaces missing teeth and the surrounding tissues, and may be removable.  Complete dentures are used when all the teeth are missing, and partial dentures are used when some natural teeth remain in the patient’s mouth and can support a bridge appliance.  Dentures are made to resemble natural teeth, and can greatly enhance your smile and your overall facial appearance.

A removable partial denture, or bridge, will consist of replacement teeth attached to a base that is colored to resemble your inner mouth and gums.  A metal framework may be attached to hold the denturein place.  A fixed bridge, by contrast, replaces one or more teeth by attaching crowns to the teeth on both sides of the open space and filling the opening with artificial teeth.  The bridge is then cemented into place, which helps keep natural teeth from changing position.

Wearing new dentureswill require a little practice; eating will be easier if the patient starts with soft foods cut into small pieces.  Chewing slowly using both sides of the mouth will help the wearer get used to the appliance.  Some foods should be avoided, especially if they’re very sticky or hard.  Denture wearers should also avoid chewing gum and using toothpicks.  For more information about dentures, please contact:
